WATCH: “Not Going to Happen” Trump Vows to Protect Statues of Jesus Christ

by Paul Goldberg

President Trump has vowed Wednesday to protect statues of Jesus Christ from extremists calling for their removal.

“They’re looking at Jesus Christ. They’re looking at George Washington.” Trump said “They’re looking Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson. Not going to happen.”

Activist Shaun King caused a stir on Twitter by calling for “all murals and stained glass windows of white Jesus” to be taken down.

His full 2-part tweet is:

Yes, I think the statues of the white European they claim is Jesus should also come down. They are a form of white supremacy. Always have been. In the Bible, when the family of Jesus wanted to hide, and blend in, guess where they went? EGYPT! Not Denmark. Tear them down.

Yes. All murals and stained glass windows of white Jesus, and his European mother, and their white friends should also come down. They are a gross form white supremacy. Created as tools of oppression. Racist propaganda. They should all come down.

Many responded with dismay.

One Twitter user replied:

You want to destroy religious objects? Does this include Michaelanangelo’s Pieta and other masterpieces from the Renaissance?

Another wrote:

You ask for prayers for your mother, but you call for the destruction of religious art that is the beautiful and sacred heritage of people who pray for you with love and compassion? It breaks my heart, but I know Jesus is returning very soon, and it breaks His heart too. Pray.

Another wrote:

As an art historian, I disagree. Art should be viewed in its historical, geographic, and socio-economic context.
