Senator Josh Hawley grilled Defense Secretary Austin on leaving Americans behind in Afghanistan after Austin echoed a Biden talking point that they are not leaving Americans behind.
Here’s the short version of Hawley’s exchange with Austin, where Hawley emphatically told him that he did leave Americans behind, and not just Americans generally, but civilians:
Hawley got Austin to admit on the record “There were Americans that were still in Afghanistan and still are; we continue to work to try and get those Americans out.”
In a separate exchange, when Hawley asked Austin if it was his opinion to withdraw earlier than August, Austin got all mealy-mouthed and wouldn’t get too specific about his recommendations, saying only the military wanted to get out the Afghans who helped us ‘as early as possible’ and they provided that ‘input’. Ultimately, he said, it was the State Department’s decision when to evacuate.
