Dems Lose Key Senator They Were Hoping Would Support Impeachment Effort

by Paul Goldberg

The Democrat managers presenting their case for the Senate impeachment trial just shot themselves in the foot.

It appears that the Democrats rhetoric is turning off some Senators that they were looking to for support to allow new evidence and witnesses to testify.

Example number one is Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) who is no fan of President Trump and is a strong moderate in the Senate. She said that she was offended by House manager Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s accusation that GOP members voting against new testimony and evidence were engaged in a “cover-up.” Keep in mind, Murkowski has said for weeks she is all for new witnesses testifying, the Democrats may have just burned a bridge.

“I took it as offensive,” she told reporters. “As one who is listening attentively and working hard to get to a fair process, I was offended.”

Murkowski wasn’t alone though, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) said that Democrats “took a huge step backwards.”

“I mean, that’s an extraordinary thing to say on the floor of the United States Senate, the middle of the trial, and that’s what drew the rebuke and rightly so,” Hawley told reporters. “I can tell you, there was an open, open gasping on the Senate floor when Nadler was saying these things. I mean, it’s really, really extraordinary.”

He concluded saying, “If the goal was to persuade, they took a huge step backward last night.”

Rep. Nadler getting on the bad side of Senator Murkowski is not a good sign, Democrats were counting on her to possibly vote to remove the President from office, after all, she was the only Republican in the Senate that voted against the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

But, when it comes to impeachment it appears that even the wayward Republican Senators like Murkowski are not amused with how the House Democrats have conducted themselves or their impeachment efforts.
