Democrat Party Targets Mount Rushmore Says 4th of July Celebration Celebrates ‘White Supremacy’

by Paul Goldberg

The Democratic Party on Monday evening targeted Mount Rushmore claiming that the President’s 4th of July celebration at the historic monument is “glorifying white supremacy.”

In a now-deleted tweet, the Democrat Party wrote:

“Trump has disrespected Native communities time and again,” the Democrats wrote on Twitter, with a link to an article in the British newspaper the Guardian, in the now-deleted tweet. “He’s attempted to limit their voting rights and blocked critical pandemic relief. Now he’s holding a rally glorifying white supremacy at Mount Rushmore–a region once sacred to tribal communities.”

They linked a story from the Guardian who quotes Oglala Lakota tribe member Nick Tilsen, the president of the local activist group “NDN Collective,” who called the historic landmark a symbol of “white supremacy.”

“Mount Rushmore is a symbol of white supremacy, of structural racism that’s still alive and well in society today,” Tilsen said.

Democrats attacking Mount Rushmore comes as activists on the left continue to tear down monuments and statues around the country. However, targeting a national landmark memorializing four American presidents – Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lincoln – claiming it represents “white supremacy” is clearly going too far. Especially considering that Roosevelt and Lincoln were pioneers in ending slavery and expending the rights of workers and minorities.

On Friday, President Trump is going to Mt. Rushmore located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The President will speak to a limited sized crowd of 7,500 and there will be a fireworks celebration.

The President has signed an executive order protecting monuments from those attempting to destroy or tear them down.

“They’re tearing down statues, desecrating monuments, and purging dissenters,” Trump said in a statement accompanying the executive order. “It’s not the behavior of a peaceful political movement; it’s the behavior of totalitarians and tyrants and people that don’t love our country.”
