Cruz Blocks Schumer Amended Resolution Honoring Ginsburg Over Inclusion of Her “Dying Wish”

by Paul Goldberg

Senator Ted Cruz has blocked an amended resolution honoring Justice Ginsburg objecting to the inclusion about her “dying wish.” Cruz then said he wanted to insert a Ginsburg quote knocking the idea of packing the court.

Chuck Schumer said while addressing the resolution “All the kind words and lamentations about Justice Ginsburg from the Republican majority will be totally empty if those Republicans ignore her dying wish and instead replace her with someone who will tear down everything she built.”

Cruz dismissed Schumer’s argument, saying “That, of course, is not the standard. Under the Constitution, members of the judiciary do not appoint their own successors.”

Cruz accused Schumer of having “put forth an amendment to turn that bipartisan resolution into a partisan resolution.”

“Specifically, the Democratic leader wants to add a statement that Justice Ginsburg’s position should not be filled until a new president is installed, purportedly based on a comment Justice Ginsburg made to family members shortly before she passed,” he added.

Cruz wrote on Twitter “Senate Republicans introduced a resolution to uphold a bipartisan tradition of commemorating the life of justices who have passed. Sen. Schumer politicized that tradition with an amended resolution to leave the #SCOTUS vacancy open — to which I objected.”
