A historic Colorado civil war statue that was toppled by George Floyd protesters and defaced outside the state capitol in June will be replaced by a statue of a native American woman.

This comes after a 7-2 vote of the Capitol building advisory committee.

CBS Denver reported on the toppling of the civil war statue at the time:

The new sculpture will be of an American Indian woman mourning the atrocities of the Sand Creek Massacre.

Otto Braided Hair, of the Northern Cheyenne and a descendant of Sand Creek survivors, told the committee “they were wiped out. Their voices are no longer heard. Their wishes and concerns were no longer heard. Those are the people we speak for.”
