Senator Rand Paul dismissed claims from former national security adviser John Bolton that are being paraded by Democrats as proof he should testify as a ploy to make more money and sell more books.
CourierJournal reports Sen. Rand Paul suggested President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, is trying to use the attention he’s getting as a potential witness in the impeachment trial to make more money off his forthcoming book.
In an interview with the Washington Examiner on Monday, the Kentucky Republican called Bolton a “disgruntled, angry man” who should be taken with a grain of salt.
“He wants to sell a book,” Paul said of Bolton, according to the Examiner.
Democrats in Congress have argued for weeks that Bolton should testify in the impeachment trial, which centers on accusations that Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine for personal, political purposes.
Demands that the Senate should call Bolton as a witness intensified this week after The New York Times reported that an unpublished draft of Bolton’s book claimed Trump wanted to hold on to millions of dollars’ worth of aid until Ukrainian officials announced investigations that could be damaging to Democrats, including former Vice President and current presidential candidate Joe Biden.
But Paul proposed that Bolton, who recently said he was prepared to testify if the Senate subpoenas him, is driven by financial motives when it comes to his involvement in the impeachment saga.
“It’s corrupt to use your government testimony to make money, don’t you think? So I think he’s doing this for mercantile reasons,” Paul said, according to the Examiner. “I think you can make a strong argument that he’s ginning up his book. That’s his right, but he’s ginning up his book with the hopes of bringing it in for testimony.
“He’ll make more money if he testifies,” Paul continued.
Paul also said Bolton is unlikely to bring anything new to the case.
“I know what he’s going to say. He’s going to say the president wanted to hold up aid for an investigation into the Bidens,” Paul said, per the Examiner. “What’s he going to tell you that you don’t already know?”
