An Alabama Democrat state lawmaker has introduced a new bill that would force all men to undergo a vasectomy within one month of their 50th birthday or after the birth of their third child, according to reports.

State Rep. Rolanda Hollis (D) from Birmingham introduced legislation that, if passed, would mandate, “every Alabama man to undergo a vasectomy within one month of his 50th birthday or the birth of his third biological child, whichever comes first.”

The bill was filed by Hollis on Thursday, according to a report

 from Alabama-based Yellowhammer News.

Hollis’s unusual measure is viewed by some a response to the 2019 passage by the state legislature of the anti-abortion Human Life Protection Act.

The pro-life law is currently making its way through the federal courts and will ban abortion with very few exceptions.

The two-page bill proposed by Hollis, HB238, notes that there are currently no restrictions on the reproductive rights of men.

HB238 states: “A man, at his own expense, shall undergo a vasectomy within one month of his 50th birthday or the birth of his third biological child, whichever comes first.”

According to Sean Ross’s report for Yellowhammer News, the bill awaits further deliberation in the Alabama House Judiciary Committee.

Hollis has a reputation for controversial antics.

During the 2019 Alabama abortion bill debate, she attempted to inject the gun rights issue into the pro-life discussion.

To make her point, she read the poem “If My Vagina was a Gun.”

Rep. Hollis said on Twitter that her new bill is in response to a proposed near-total ban on abortion in the state that was struck down by a federal court in 2019.

“The Vasectomy bill is to help with the reproductive system. This is to neutralize the abortion ban bill,” Hollis wrote in the tweet.

“The responsibility is not always on the women. It takes 2 to tangle,” she added.

“This will help prevent pregnancy as well as abortion of unwanted children.”

Hollis said her radical bill was meant ‘to neutralize the abortion ban bill’ in Alabama

“The vasectomy bill is to help with he reproductive system, and yes, it is to neutralize the abortion ban bill … it always takes two to tango,” she told Al.com.

“Men need to be responsible also.”

Hollis’s bill stipulates that men who satisfy the aforementioned requirements would have to pay for the procedure on their own.

The abortion law passed last year would ban abortion in nearly all instances, and any doctor who performs an abortion would face felony charges and a sentence of up to 99 years in prison.

However, the bill was blocked from taking effect in November by U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson, who found it unconstitutional.

The Alabama Attorney General’s office did not appeal the temporary injunction.
